The Fun of Country Swing Dancing

Country swing dancing varies from original swing dancing and it was introduced in Harlem during 1920s.This form of dance is also popularly known as Western Swing. This form of music and dance is clearly inspired by the original yet has its own distinct style. There are many enthusiasts these days who have formed their own clubs, competitions and associations around this type of music and dance. There are books, DVDs, web sites and classes devoted to Western Swing.

If you want to read more about this type of dance, there are a few titles that are ideal. The Life of Bob Willis: The King of Western Swing is a book devoted to the life and times of the man thought of as the father of country and western swing dance. Western Swing by Andrew G. Hager is another great title. DVDs can be a great introduction to this type of dance and can help you figure out whether or not it looks like something you would find enjoyable. Check out Still Swingin: 100th Birthday Special Edition which is several hours of performance and documentary footage.

When it comes to music, there are plenty of choices out there. Artists include Bill Adams, Charlie Adams, Dave Alexander, Chet Atkins, Noel Boggs, the Bebop Cowboys and many more. Country swing music is distinctly different from both traditional country music and traditional swing music. It is best described as a fusion between the two which lends itself perfectly to the dance being performed. One of the most popular bands of the 40s were the Light Crust Doughboys, a Western swing group with nationwide popularity.

Western swing is a type of dance which features the same beat patterns and many of the same moves as original swing with a country twist. Costumes are also distinctly western in nature and feature down-home ruffles, gingham prints, cowboy hats and boots, and country style accessories and adornments. If you're already a fan of country music or country line dancing, then you're likely to enjoy country swing dancing. To learn Western swing, it's a good idea to take lessons with a partner. Once you get the basics down pat, you'll be ready to practice this fun form of dancing in Western clubs and at swing dancing events.
